Day 108- NEW HABIT: Flexibility

NEW HABIT: Go to 5 yoga & pilates classes every week at the gym

I joined the gym two weeks ago and have done something there nearly everyday. They have classes there too so I have been trying out different ones to see what I like and can fit in. I’ve tried yoga, pilates, stretch & tone, Buti yoga and spinning. I particularly like the yoga and pilates so I want to make them my first gym habits I’ll commit to. There is 2 yoga and 2 pilates classes and a Buti yoga session. If I attend them all, it means I’m doing yoga & pilates 5 days a week. I swear this week I have done 50 or more downward facing dogs.

When I have fantasised about having exercise in my life, I’ve always imagined a balance or cardio, strength building and flexibility. The 5 classes I now attend tick the flexibility box very nicely. My yoga efforts now have been the worse I’ve ever seen them because I’m older and haven’t done it for a long time but I can already feel my balance and flexibility is improving in two weeks. With 5 classes a week, I could get really good which I’ve never achieved before.

Buti yoga is a more energetic yoga, almost like dance moves. Pilates is very much focused on engaging weak muscles. Yoga is about holding and perfecting different positions.

I like these classes so much and believe I can become accomplished. I’m already fantasising about buying nice outfits for these classes but I have to lose weight before I spend money on new clothes.

I plan to blog about my cardio and strength training habits soon. They will compliment the flexibility habits when I’ve decided what they will be.

“I will attend all 5 yoga & pilates classes every week at the gym whenever possible”

Day 106- FITBIT UPDATE

Last week I had a full week at the gym that I’ve just joined. I went three times in the morning, did the treadmill followed by some weight training. And in the evening I did 2 yoga and pilates classes each and some spinning on Sunday. I would really expect to see some improvement in my Fitbit stats but the results are unusual.

Steppage and calories burned are up but my active minutes are down. Even though I increased my exercise from the week before by over 4 hours, it hasn’t translated into active minutes. I think this is because yoga and pilates aren’t ‘active’ enough. Any kind of walking is active though, so that is something I wish to do more of. Sleep is rarely above 6 1/2 hours and still needs work. My water consumption has dropped because I’m not finishing the bottle at work and forgetting to bring water up to bed. I think everything will improve next week. I go to a class everyday at gym now.

Day 100- TASK: eBay Cupboard

TASK: Tidy understairs cupboard and gather together all eBay items to sell

It’s day 100 on the path to perfection. I’m so pleased and proud with myself for keeping up the effort for this long. The last time I went on this venture, I think I made it to 130-140 days. This time, I’m in it for the long haul and there will be no surrender.

At the weekend I spontaneously decided to tidy up the cupboard under the stairs and get all my eBay items together. I guess the motivation was the need to get money onto my PayPal to fund the Liz Earle products I’m slowly depending on.

It was a real mess to start with. Everything in there had just been thrown on top of one another.

I pulled everything out and organised everything for selling on eBay I in the corner of my kitchen, in the vain hope it will be a constant reminder to get on with creating the listings.

With the eBay items out of the way, I could really think hard about what I might like to put back in the cupboard. For a long time now, I’ve wished to have the vacuum cleaner in there instead of in the kitchen or around the house.

It looks so much better now and I did manage to get the vacuum cleaner in there. There’s now just that, the ironing board & iron, shopping bags and some shoes. Now I just have to get on with selling the rest of the stuff on eBay.

Day 98- NEW HABIT: The Gym

NEW HABIT: Try to go to the gym twice a day on weekdays for 3 months

The good news that my job role is to develop into something more professional from the 1st April means I am more inspired than I have been for a very long time. I want to dress more professionally for the role and feel good about myself. It has inspired me to join the gym because we have a new one recently opened right between my home and work. My sons go to it and my eldest son has been saying for a while that he could easily train me to lose weight and gain muscle if we went together. Impulsively, I went to the gym after work on Friday and signed up for 3 months. Thats two months before my role starts and one month after. I should think with commitment I can lose the 30+ surplus pounds I’m carrying around. 10 pounds a month is totally doable. I have joined an Anytime Fitness gym. It’s about £40 a month and you can only join for 3 months if you pay it all up front.

The gym is really nice with lots of stuff available. I’m chuffed that the showers are like individual bathrooms so I can lock the door and get on with my beauty regimen. Fingers crossed they are not too popular and busy. There are also a variety of classes I can attend, included in the price. I’m excited because there are lots I’m interested in, like variations of yoga. I can book the day before. There are even classes at 6am and I’m sure if I get addicted I would attend them, use the gym and then go to work.

I want to make the gym part of my daily routine once or twice a day so I have had to review all my habits and their timings for the entire day. Here is my revised plan for my daily weekday habits.

0645 hrs- Get up & put on gym wear

0650 hrs- Make bed

0655 hrs- Dental routine

0700 hrs- Finish packing for work

0705 hrs- Do any washing up

Day 92- FITBIT UPDATE

Surprisingly, my Fitbit stats are all up this week except for my water which I thought had really improved. Nevermind, maybe last week was rock bottom and it’s all uphill from here.

Day 85- FITBIT UPDATE: Review

I’m so sick of my Fitbit stats not improving much and that I keep failing to commit to the new habit of walking to work. I think there are 3 reasons I’m struggling:

  1. It’s cold
  2. I don’t make enough time in the morning
  3. I don’t have the right clothes or bag to not look ridiculous on my way to work.

I was very close today in giving up on the Fitbit progression or at least giving up on creating habits that may improve them. But I’ve changed my mind and I will keep updating it but I won’t be creating new habits every week. I will just create them as and when, as I do with all my other habits.

I am doing really well with my water consumption. I now I have 2 litres a day set in stone. All I need to do now is find another litre somewhere and I’ve reached my target. I also need to make it count at the weekend too.

Day 83- NEW HABIT: The Houseplants

NEW HABIT: Check water levels everyday & water once a week.

NEW HABIT: Re-pot every 6 months, Spring & Autumn.

NEW HABIT: Feed every 2 weeks

NEW HABIT: Budget £50 every 6 months for new compost, plants and pots

I spent about £100 on houseplants and pots at Ikea a year ago to liven up my living room and inject some oxygen and nature into my environment.

I have struggled to look after them. I lost the Aloe Vera plants very quickly. And the ivy started to survive only when I put it in the kitchen. There are a couple of spikey plants that have thrived and don’t seem to mind not being watered but my large plants are suffering. They either dry out and turn brown and flag, so I water them more, and then they rot at the root, wither and die. I’ve learned that different plants need different care, so I have to get to know their individual needs. I’ve learned that too much water around the roots can rot them, so I have to be really careful how much I water them. Maybe less frequently? I think I will put a water container outside to collect rainwater to water the plants because I’ve read it’s beneficial to them.

So today I’m going to review my plants and buy new pots and re-pot them if necessary. I may find new locations for them around the house and henceforth, I will introduce the new habits which should help them thrive more.

“I will check the condition of my houseplants everyday. I will give them a proper water once a week. Every two weeks, I”l drop some feed into the water. Every six months I will re-pot them if needed. I will budget £50 every six months to fund new compost, plants and pots”

I bought a couple of new pots and plants from Ikea today and re-organised my houseplants. Unfortunately, a couple of them had to be thrown away. Here are pictures of the newly potted plants and their new locations.
