HABIT BREAK: Give up caffeinated tea with milk

Update: I have not successfully given up tea

I’m on a journey now to transition to a plant-based, vegan diet. I initially broke the habit of takeaways and now I’m ready to give up another habit. I haven’t had a cup of tea in a few days now. I’m ready to give it up until 31st December 2019. I’m going to give up a few things until then and then on the 31st I will review what things I would considering reintroducing in a controlled manner.

Day 12- NEW HABIT: Sunday Mornings

NEW HABIT: Start Sunday mornings with a tea and a lay-in

Habits aren’t just about bad, horrible things we don’t want to do. To succeed on the path to perfection and arrive at where you want to be, also means scheduling fun stuff too. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, remember. All week I’ve committed to get out of bed, skipping lazy bed-tea and doing chores, so I feel now I can justify the very opposite. I’m still going to have an alarm and a get-up time. No alarm and long lay-ins are for holidays, hotel stays and sick days. They have to be few and far between, to feel really good. On Sundays the alarm will wake me at 9am. That’s two hours later than a work day so definitely a lay-in. And here’s the treat. I get a cup a tea I’ve denied myself during the week AND I get to take it back to bed with me. Once in bed I’m sure I’ll find myself surfing the net or playing a game but at 10:30am I have to get up, to get on with the things that need to get done to stay on the path to perfection.

Day 9- NEW HABIT: Breakfast

NEW HABIT: Eat breakfast every morning on a work day

Ooh, this is my first biggie. Some days, the only thing that gets me out of bed is a nice cup of tea. Now, you might say, I could have tea and breakfast, but I just don’t enjoy a milky tea followed by breakfast type foods, especially porridge, which I plan to be a staple. There is also not enough time to increase the gap between the two. Besides, long term I plan to phase tea out all together, so all in all, a switcheroo is a step in the right direction. And it’s only on work days… for now.

So, after I’ve made the packed lunches, my next habit is to have breakfast. To start with I’m going to simply have porridge made with semi-skimmed milk and a spoonful of sugar. The worse rendition of porridge one can think of, other than those processed, ready-made packets. But, it’s a starting point, and in time breakfast will slowly improve. I just have to start with having something, and not the tea.
